5 Common Applications of the NLP

One of the most controversial psychotherapy concepts is the NLP or neuro-linguistic programming. This approach has been discovered and developed in the 1970s. It has been modified and explored throughout the years as psychology specialists learn more about it. Despite the controversy surrounding it, the NLP has been used and adapted to design programs to address many problems. The NLP has the basic premise that an inner, subconscious perception of our problems is reflected in the words that we use and that if this perception is inaccurate and unhealthy, continuing to use them and think of them will cause the problems to persist.

The NLP plays on the age-old saying of “mind over matter” because it says that things around a person are affected by how he or she thinks. According to the NLP, a person’s life is affected by his or her mindset and way of thinking. Using this concept, the psychotherapy approach is then to slowly change a person’s mindset in order to help him solve his or her problems. Below are some of the common situations wherein the neuro-linguistic approach is applied.

Phobias. Some extreme phobias are detrimental to one’s life because they prevent one from fully enjoying and living a normal life. Since phobias are based on a person’s thinking and reaction towards a particular thing or event, the NLP is widely used to address this by helping a person learn to manage his or her own thoughts and feelings.

Depression. Although there are some cases of depression that are affected by chemical or hormonal imbalances in the body, there are still some that are driven by how the person thinks and looks at life. Changing the person’s mindset would ideally cure the depression.

Habit Disorder. Habits are said to be patterns of behavior. Because neuro-linguistic programming promotes the potential for self-determination, it is also being used as a technique to overcome unhealthy habits. A more serious habit disorder where it is sometimes applied is the obsessive compulsive disorder.

Psychosomatic Illnesses. These illnesses are illnesses that have no physiological basis, which means symptoms are present despite the absence of any real problem or sickness in the body. Since these illnesses are said to be “all in the mind”, NLP is used to address them.

Management Training. Most company employees who are being trained for management positions undergo some kind of management training. These training programs are targeted to “mold” a person’s mindset into fulfilling a management positions.

With a little practice and a little patience, you too can rid yourself of the above issues and better your life in wonderful ways. I wish you the best of luck.
